Open SonificationS

Over the last couple of years, we’ve been working with researcher Jordan Wirfs-Brock and composer Jamie Perera to define a new style of sonification that we like to call “Open Sonifications”.

Think simple, stripped-down, no-tech sounds, driven by data. Like this piece Jordan made that compresses 24 hours of heart rate readings into just one minute. You’ll find more details over at opensonifications.net.

In 2024, we codified our work into a paper that we presented at the Outlier and Designing Interactive Systems conferences. Here’s a summary of the core of the project.

WANT TO MAKE YOUR OWN?

We run workshops where we take participants through the process of creating their own open sonifications. It’s a great way to look at data in a new light, and uncover how people feel about it.
